COAT DRIVE WINTER 2019--2020
Once again, we are SO WARMED by the generosity of our neighbors! GENA volunteers sorted nine contractor bags of coats today, and we're proud to announce that 67 coats and lots of warm hats and gloves are making their way to Our Brothers Place and Maternity Care Coalition. GENA's 2019 Easter Egg Hunt in Stephen Girard Park!
About 200 children and their families gathered to enjoy a warm and festive day and three separate egg hunts. DJ Greggie C. Kept the entertainment coming, while Emily from Anderson Family Fun crafted dozens of child-delighting balloon figures. Raffles intrigued the grown-ups, and a crafts table occupied the talented tots. As the Easter bunny held court (and photo-ops) by the Stephen Girard Statue, at last it was time for the hunts to begin. Thanks to Friends of Stephen Girard Park, the students of Gamp, our many generous sponsors, and all those GENA Volunteers who helped out. Special thanks to Jessica Frye, our Vice-President and Events Chairperson, who worked so hard to make this a smashing success!
2019 FOOD DRIVE

Thanks again to all who made our annual food drive a huge success!

Hair Raising Info at the Electricity Science Show
Once again, GENA, Franklin Institute and the Donatucci Library teamed up for another fun and educational presentation from the Franklin Institute's traveling repertoire on October 9th 2018. This time, the topic was Electricity, as a rapt audience got an intro to the attractions and repulsions of electro-magnetism, static electricity, batteries and lightning. Sponsored by GENA through a PAFA grant made possible through the efforts of Councilman Kenyatta Johnson.

SRO for The Traveling Science Show!
It was standing room only for the Franklin Institute's Traveling Science Show, "Life in Space" at Donatucci Library, this past Tuesday, June 12th 2018. Over 100 children and their parents learned about rocket propulsion, the vacuum of space, why there is no such thing as "zero gravity", and why astronauts sometimes need diapers in an hour-long, fun-and-science filled format. Sponsored by GENA through a PAFA grant made possible through the efforts of Councilman Kenyatta Johnson.

FAMILY CONCERT SERIES 2017
DONATUCCI LIBRARY GARDEN
This past spring, summer and fall, GENA presented three education-oriented family concerts at the Donatucci Library Garden, thanks to a grant from the Philadelphia Activities Fund and made possible with the generous help of Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Concert one, by Tommy and the uncle Brothers Band, was a part of the kickoff of the library's summer reading program . In concert number two, music and a fun, audience participation style was provided by The Cat's Pajamas. The third in this series of concerts reprised the Uncle Brothers and ushered in the new school year by highlighting the library as a resource.
Special thanks are due to Jessica Frye for her work in obtaining the grant and planning this creative and education-friendly series. Great fun not just for kids, but for all ages!

This Christmas, GENA, GEAR and Friends of Stephen Girard Park teamed up for a combined Christmas in the Park with all the usual trimmings: Carriage Rides, Tree Lighting, Toys for tots, the GAMP choir singing Christmas Carols, Santa and Befana. Easter Egg Hunt 2016 -- Christmas Weather
But Springtime Fun!
With snow flurries holding off just long enough, it was almost Christmas weather for the 2016 Easter Egg Hunt -- but the smiles were warm! Children enjoyed the crafts table, the balloon animals, the music and games of DJ Jim Mulholland, a visit with the Easter Bunny -- and of course, hunting for over 3,000 eggs all over the western end of Girard Park.
GENA'S CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK 2015 OUR BIGGEST EVER
Unseasonably warm weather and a big flyer campaign brought out a record crowd for GENA's Christmas in the park. Two carriages and a horse-drawn wagon gave the community a traditional ride around the park. The Marines were there with Toys for Tots and got a generous Girard Estate welcome, while the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School sang carols and DJ Johnny Looch entertained. At dusk, we lit up the fifteen foot Christmas Tree with the help of a countdown from the crowd and a dedication by St. Monica's Father Kelley. And the world's best Santa heard the Christmas wishes of the little ones.
FAMILIES ENJOYED THE LEGO MOVIE UNDER THE STARS IN GIRARD PARK
A Wednesday Night (June 24, 2015) at dusk was the time to see The LEGO Movie in Girard Park under the stars. What's Dusk??? Well, officially it is the time right after the sun goes down below the horizon. Unofficially, it was at 8:30,as soon as it was dark enough.
Gorgeous night, fabulous neighbors, generous sponsors, and a whole lot of Lego fun. Thanks to all who came out to enjoy the movie! And a huge thanks to our volunteers and partners, especially Sound Advantage, Inc, Gentile's Fresh Harvest and ShopRite. "Everything WAS AWESOME".
THE GENA 2015 EASTER EGG HUNT WAS A FUN-FOR-ALL !
On Saturday, March 28th in Girard Park, about 300 people gathered for the second annual GENA Easter Egg Hunt. The children enjoyed DJ Jim Mulholland, whose talented work as emcee kept the flow going with hula hooping and dance contests. They lined up for balloon animals and flowers made by Bonnie the Balloon Artist, or took a photo op with the Easter Bunny. But most of all, they hunted... and did they go at it! We had scatttered over 3000 eggs all over the west end of Girard Park in three hunt areas -- one for 3 and under, one for 4-6 year olds, and one for 7 to 10 year olds, and we figured on 15 minutes for each event. Were we surprised when the little hunters hoovered up those eggs in more like two minutes! Councilman Kenyatta Johnson made an appearance, and he graciously acted as starter for some of the hunts. There are some photos below, and more on this facebook link.
Many thanks to those who generously contributed to the raffles: to Dave Storione for the Phillies tickets, to Taproom on 19th, American Sardine Bar, Dad's Stuffings and Pizzeria Pesto for the gift cards, and to Pastificio for their wonderful basket of goodies!
GENA, TAPROOM ON 19TH, AND ONE WARM COAT HELD A COAT DRIVE.
GIRARD ESTATE GAVE THE GIFT OF WARMTH TO OVER 100 PEOPLE IN NEED in 2015
Councilman Kenyatta Johnson dropped by to show his support.
Some of our "Christmas in Girard Park" Event Volunteers
GENA hosted a very successful winter coat drive this past February 11th at the Taproom on 19th! There were people in and out all day long, donating everything from a single denim jacket to a bag of 15 coats. We were overwhelmed to carry home 16 contractor bags of donated coats at the close of the event, and after sorting through them we've tallied 38 men's, 52 women's, and 25 children's coats.
We donated the men's coats to Bethesda Project - an agency that manages 13 homeless shelters throughout Philadelphia, while the women's and youth coats went to Maternity Care Coalition - an organization that seeks to improve maternal and child health well-being through a variety of family services.
Jessica Frye, Events Committee Chairperson, said of the event, "A huge thanks to everyone who helped plan, support and donate to this great cause. I'm so moved by the generosity of our neighbors!"
And in March, we followed up with a successful food drive.
Partnering again with Taproom on 19th, and with Philabundance, GENA co- sponsored a food drive on Wednesday, March 11th 2015. Girard Estate residents responded generously, loading up six boxes with much needed cereal, canned proteins and vegetables, and other non-perishable food items -- about 180 pounds in all. Thanks, Girard Estate!

CHRISTMAS IN GIRARD PARK 2014
This year's Christmas in the Park saw nearly 400 people who came by to visit with Santa, have a cup of hot chocolate taste some christmas cookies, ride on the carriages, enjoy some seasonal music, and watch the Girard Park Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
Many thanks to our neighbors for their generous donations to Toys for Tots -- we filled four big boxes and the Marines went home happy. One wonderful neighbor, who won a Ninja Turtle in the raffle, even donated her prize! Look at the slide show below, and
please check out our many donors on our Donors page. Their generosity is a shining example of the Christmas Spirit.
Movie Under The Stars 2014 In Girard Park Proves That Third Time Is The Charm
We tried once -- it rained. We tried again -- the forecast was strong for rain, so we cancelled and -- no rain. So we tried again, and this time, perseverence was rewarded! about 200 people showed up with lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy Despicable Me 2 in Girard Park. See the slide show below...
THE GENA 2014 EASTER EGG HUNT WAS A NEIGHBORHOOD SUCCESS!
Around 400 neighbors showed up on Saturday, April 12th for the first Easter Egg hunt in Girard Park in years. Entertained by the music and emcee talents of DJ Jim Mulholland, the children danced, played games, and enjoyed refreshments. They made bunny masks and decorated easter "baskets" at the crafts table. In three separate age groups, they ranged over the southwest part of the park, picking up over 2000 easter eggs. And of course, they got to high-five and sit for a photo op with the Easter Bunny. Thanks to Donatucci Library for lending us that Easter Bunny! Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and State Representative Maria Donatucci showed their support for the neighborhood by dropping by for a visit., and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell donated 5 Zoo tickets to our gift basket. Many thanks to Mike Fera, outgoing Events Chairman, for a terrific job of organizing. Please take a look at our Donors page to see the local businesses and friends who gave us their generous assistance.
